Your weight and BMI
Healthy or not?
Healthy eating has been a hot topic for some time. But more recently,
the issue of obesity has been grabbing the headlines. This is because obesity
is becoming more common, and is a problem for many people, especially young
people right now.
To put you in the picture, obesity is a medical
term that means someone’s
weight is likely to cause serious health problems
in the future. Some of these problems could be cancer,
heart disease, diabetes and depression.
Sometimes it can be difficult to know if you’ve got a weight problem
or not. Your clothes might fit you fine and you feel like you eat pretty
healthily – after all, you don’t pig out on crisps, canned drinks
and chocolate all day. Or do you? Maybe you look at all the other people
out there who are bigger and heavier than you and perhaps you don’t
feel like it’s an issue for you.
Or maybe you know that you’re bigger than you’d like to be.
You can see that your clothes don’t fit as well as you’d like
them to, and OK, not everyone can look like (or wants to look like!) a
Pussy Cat Doll, or David Beckham, but you know you could look and feel better.
Perhaps you don’t doubt you’ve got a problem, but you don’t
know where to start!
The best place for anyone to start is with the BMI index chart.
This can tell you whether you are a healthy weight for your
age and height. Once you know this, you can work out
whether you want to do something about it or not. And even if you come out
smelling of strawberries, within the right range, let’s face it, most
of us could do with being a bit healthier. There are far more benefits to
a good diet than just being a healthy weight.
